Saint Brendan (also known as Saint Brendan the Navigator or Brendan of Clonfert, c. 484–577 AD) was an early Irish monk, priest, abbot, and one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland. Born near Tralee in County Kerry, Ireland, he was educated by notable saints such as St. Ita and ordained a priest around age 26. He founded several monasteries, most famously the great monastery of Clonfert in Galway, where he served as abbot to a large community of monks.

He is best remembered for the famous medieval tale The Voyage of Saint Brendan (Navigatio Sancti Brendani), which describes an epic seven-year sea journey across the Atlantic with a group of monks in a leather-covered boat (currach). The legendary voyage includes encounters with islands, sea monsters, whales, and mystical places—possibly inspiring later explorations. His feast day is May 16.
