St. Dominic Medal

$1.50

Saint Dominic (also known as Saint Dominic de Guzmán, 1170–1221) was a Spanish priest, founder of the Dominican Order (Order of Preachers), and a key figure in the medieval Church.

Born in Caleruega, Spain, he was educated by Augustinian canons and ordained a priest. While on a mission in southern France, he became deeply concerned about the spread of the Albigensian (Cathar) heresy. He realized that the Church needed well-educated, zealous preachers who lived simply and traveled on foot to combat false teachings through preaching and example.

In 1216 he officially founded the Dominican Order, whose mission was (and still is) to preach the Gospel and defend the truth of the Catholic faith. The Dominicans became famous for their scholarship, preaching, and intellectual rigor (producing great saints and theologians like St. Thomas Aquinas). Dominic emphasized prayer, study, and poverty. He died in Bologna, Italy, on August 6, 1221. He was canonized in 1234, and his feast day is August 8.
