St. Gertrude the Great Medal
Saint Gertrude the Great (1256–1302) was a German Benedictine nun, mystic, and theologian, often called one of the greatest mystics of the Middle Ages.
Born in Thuringia (Germany), she entered the Benedictine monastery at Helfta at the age of five. She received an excellent education and became a brilliant scholar. At age 26, she experienced a profound spiritual conversion and was granted many mystical visions and ecstasies, especially of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She is considered one of the first great promoters of devotion to the Sacred Heart. Her most famous work is The Herald of Divine Love (Legatus Divinae Pietatis), a spiritual classic.
She is also remembered for her deep devotion to the souls in Purgatory. A well-known tradition says that Christ revealed to her that praying the prayer below would release 1,000 souls from Purgatory each time it is devoutly recited.
Her feast day is November 16.
