St. Jerome Medal

$1.50

Saint Jerome (c. 347–420 AD), also known as Saint Jerome of Stridon, was a brilliant scholar, priest, hermit, and one of the greatest Doctors of the Church.

Born in Stridon (on the border of modern-day Slovenia and Croatia), he studied in Rome and was baptized around age 20. After years of travel and living as a hermit in the Syrian desert, he was ordained a priest and later served as secretary to Pope Damasus I in Rome.

Jerome is most famous for his monumental work: translating the entire Bible from Hebrew and Greek into Latin. This translation, known as the Vulgate, became the official Bible of the Western Church for over 1,000 years. He was also a fierce defender of orthodox Christian doctrine, a prolific writer of biblical commentaries, and a strong advocate for monastic life and asceticism. He spent the last 34 years of his life in a monastery in Bethlehem, where he continued his scholarly work until his death on September 30, 420. His feast day is September 30.
