Saint Louis de Montfort (1673–1716)

Saint Louis de Montfort was a French priest, passionate preacher, and one of the greatest Marian saints in Church history.

Who He Was

Born Louis Marie Grignion in Montfort-sur-Meu, Brittany, France, he was ordained a priest in 1700. He spent his life preaching missions, especially to the poor and ordinary people in rural France. Known for his fiery sermons and profound love for the Virgin Mary, he dedicated himself completely to leading souls to Jesus through Mary.

He founded two religious congregations:

  • The Company of Mary (Montfort Missionaries)

  • The Daughters of Wisdom

His most influential works, True Devotion to Mary and The Secret of Mary, teach a deep consecration to Jesus through Mary — a total surrender that he described as the quickest, easiest, and most perfect way to belong to Christ. His personal motto was “Totus Tuus” (“I am all yours”), offered to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

He died on April 28, 1716, at the age of 43, exhausted from his tireless missionary work. He was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1947. His feast day is celebrated on April 28.
